Claude for Shopify: Control Every Part of Your Store (2026)

Claude for Shopify: How to Control Every Part of Your Store With AI (2026 Guide)

Most Shopify owners spend hours a week clicking through the admin: checking yesterday’s sales, fixing products, chasing low stock, setting up discounts. With Claude connected to your store, you do the same work by asking for it in plain English, and Claude does it through Shopify’s own API.

I run Muhra, my own Shopify store in Egypt, and I use Claude this way every day. This guide shows the three official ways to connect Claude to Shopify, what it can control in every part of your store, the prompts I actually use, and the rules that keep it safe.

The 3 ways to connect Claude to Shopify

There are three official routes, and they serve different people. Most store owners only need the first.

1

For store owners

Shopify connector in Claude

Connect your store from Claude’s Connectors settings and run it by chatting. No code.

  • Products, collections, inventory
  • Orders and customers
  • Discounts
  • Analytics with ShopifyQL
  • Any Admin API call
2

For builders

Shopify AI Toolkit for Claude Code

Shopify’s official plugin. Claude gets the docs, API schemas and code validation, and can run store tasks through Shopify CLI.

  • Themes and Liquid
  • Apps and Shopify Functions
  • Metafields and metaobjects
  • Bulk store tasks
3

For developers

Shopify Dev MCP server

A local server that gives Claude Shopify’s developer docs and Admin GraphQL schema. Read-only, no login.

  • Docs search
  • Schema lookup
  • Writing correct GraphQL
The three official ways to connect Claude to Shopify, and who each one is for.

If you want an AI assistant that talks to your shoppers instead, that is a different job. Shopify now provides shopper-facing catalog and cart access for AI agents through its Universal Commerce Protocol, and the Inbox agent in Shopify Inbox for merchants who want it without code.

Set it up in 5 minutes

Store owners: the Shopify connector

  1. Open Claude and go to Connectors in its settings.
  2. Find Shopify and click Connect.
  3. Sign in to Shopify and approve access for your store. You never paste a password or API key into the chat.
  4. Start a new chat and ask something simple, like “What were my sales yesterday?”
  5. Switch stores any time by asking Claude to switch shop; it will ask you to sign in to the other store.

Builders: the Shopify AI Toolkit in Claude Code

You need Node.js 18 or higher. Shopify recommends the plugin, which updates itself:

claude plugin install shopify-ai-toolkit@claude-plugins-official

For docs and schema lookup only, add the Dev MCP server instead. It runs locally and needs no login:

claude mcp add --transport stdio shopify-dev-mcp -- npx -y @shopify/dev-mcp@latest

Restart Claude Code after either install.

What Claude can control, part by part

Here is every major part of a Shopify store, what Claude can do there, and the kind of request that works. The first seven work through the connector; themes, apps and Functions need the AI Toolkit.

Products & catalog

Create, edit, find and bulk-publish products and variants.

“Set every winter product to draft.”

Collections

Build collections and add or remove products.

“Make a Best Sellers collection from the top 12 products by sales.”

Inventory

Check stock levels by location and set quantities.

“Which products have fewer than 5 units left?”

Orders

List, search and open orders with their details.

“Show yesterday’s unfulfilled orders over $100.”

Customers

Find customers and see who returns.

“How many customers bought twice this month?”

Discounts

Create discount codes and automatic offers.

“Create WELCOME10: 10% off first orders, ends 31 December.”

Analytics

Ask questions; Claude writes and runs ShopifyQL.

“Compare sales by month this year with last year.”

Themes & Liquid

Edit sections and templates, validated against Shopify’s schema (AI Toolkit).

“Add a size-guide block under the price.”

Apps, Functions & metafields

Build custom logic and data fields (AI Toolkit).

“Add a care-instructions metafield to all dresses.”

Everything else

Any Shopify Admin API query or change, written in GraphQL for you.

“List products with no image or no description.”

The control map: every part of a Shopify store, what Claude can do there, and an example of what to ask.

Products and collections

Claude can search your catalog, create products with variants, edit titles, prices and descriptions, and change status in bulk. Ask it to show a list before it changes anything, then approve the change in one go.

Inventory

Ask for stock levels by product or location, find what is running low, and set new quantities after a delivery. Combine it with analytics to see what will run out soon, not just what already has.

Orders and customers

Claude can list and filter orders, open one order’s full details, and look up customers. This is where daily checks get fast: unfulfilled orders, big orders, repeat buyers.

Discounts

Describe the offer and Claude creates it: percentage or fixed amount, minimum spend, usage limits and end date. Always read back the summary before you approve it, because a wrong discount costs real money.

Analytics with ShopifyQL

This is the most useful part. ShopifyQL is Shopify’s analytics language. You ask a business question, and Claude writes the query, runs it against your store and returns a table. Sales, orders, average order value, sessions, conversion rate, returning customers, top products: all of it.

Anything else in the Admin API

If there is no ready-made tool for a task, Claude can write a GraphQL query or change for Shopify’s Admin API, check it against the schema and run it. That is how “every single part” really becomes reachable.

How a request works

  1. You askin plain English
  2. Claude planspicks the right tool or writes GraphQL / ShopifyQL
  3. Shopify answersthrough the official API
  4. You approvechanges, before they are made
  5. You get the resulta table, a chart or a done task
What happens behind one request. Reads are instant; changes wait for your approval.

Claude looks things up through the API first and works with the real IDs from your store. For anything that changes your store, ask it to show you what will change, and keep Claude’s tool approval switched on so each change waits for your OK.

Real example: Muhra’s launch numbers

When I wanted to see how Muhra grew after launch, I asked Claude one question: “Show my orders and net sales by month since January.” Claude wrote and ran this ShopifyQL:

FROM sales
  SHOW orders, net_sales, average_order_value
  TIMESERIES month
  SINCE 2026-01-01 UNTIL today

Muhra Store: monthly orders, Feb to May 2026

74Feb300Mar341Apr442May

Pulled by Claude with one ShopifyQL query through the Shopify connector.

The answer to “how did orders grow after launch?” came back in seconds, straight from Shopify’s own analytics.

Orders went from 74 in February to 442 in May, and a second question about sessions showed the conversion rate rising from 1.1% to 2.0%. Getting this from the Shopify admin means exporting reports and building a chart by hand. With Claude it took one sentence.

8 prompts to copy

These are written the way I actually use them. Be specific about dates, limits and whether Claude should change anything.

Daily check

Give me yesterday’s orders, revenue and average order value, and compare each with the same day last week.

Catalog clean-up

List every active product with no image, no description or a price of zero. Don’t change anything yet.

Stock alert

Which products will run out in the next 14 days at the last 30 days’ sales rate?

Launch

Create a draft product called “Linen Shirt” in sizes S to XL, at $49, and add it to the Summer collection.

Offer

Create a code EID15 for 15% off orders over $80, one use per customer, ending Sunday at midnight.

Customers

How many customers placed a second order within 60 days of their first, by month?

Conversion

Show sessions, add-to-cart rate and conversion rate by week for the last 8 weeks, as a table.

Products

Which 10 products made the most net sales this quarter, and which 10 made the least?

For builders: themes, apps and Functions

With the Shopify AI Toolkit in Claude Code, Claude works from Shopify’s current documentation and API schemas instead of memory. It validates GraphQL queries, Liquid templates and extensions against Shopify’s schemas before you ship them, and it can run supported store tasks through Shopify CLI’s signed-in store context.

  • Themes: add sections and blocks, fix Liquid errors, change templates.
  • Metafields and metaobjects: add structured data like size guides or care instructions.
  • Apps and Functions: custom discount logic, delivery rules and checkout behaviour.
  • Admin GraphQL: one-off scripts for bulk jobs the admin can’t do.

Work on a duplicate theme or a development store, preview it, then publish.

Safety rules

Safe to run any time

  • Sales, orders and traffic reports
  • Looking up products, stock and customers
  • Finding problems: missing images, low stock
  • Drafting product descriptions

Check before you approve

  • Bulk price or status changes
  • Inventory quantities
  • Discount codes
  • Theme edits on the live theme
Reading your store is risk-free. Anything that changes it deserves a second look.
  1. Never paste API tokens or passwords into a chat. Connect through Shopify’s own sign-in.
  2. Preview first. Ask for the list of affected products before any bulk change.
  3. Start small. Run a new kind of change on 2 or 3 products, check them, then do the rest.
  4. Keep a backup. Export your products to CSV before big catalog edits.
  5. Use a duplicate theme for theme work, never the live one.

FAQ

Can Claude really manage my Shopify store?
